How It Works

The BATC will develop American distance running in three primary ways. These include supporting an elite athlete team, a range of community programs, and a general membership team

First, the Club will provide a much-needed service to the Bay Area’s elite and emerging athletes, as many under-perform due to lack of support and organized group structure. The current elite team is currently comprised of eleven Bay Area residents, many with Olympic or international racing experience. The BATC will provide team training sessions at UC Berkeley and San Francisco State University, a collaborative coaching staff, a comprehensive medical team, accessible altitude training, and living stipends. With the support of The Sports Basement and Transports, the team will also offer a critical element for post-collegiate athlete success: flexible employment. Providing such services will allow elites to focus on their 2012 Olympic preparations.

Second, the BATC will promote running and lifelong fitness to thousands of local residents through events such as instructional clinics, meet appearances, group fun runs, peer mentoring, motivational seminars, and running camps. These programs will supplement, educate, and enrich existing fitness-based organizations. This will make the BATC an epicenter of healthy living in the Bay Area, providing valuable resources to the spectrum of youth and adults pursuing an active lifestyle.

Third, the Club will support an open team for regional runners as club #389 of the Pacific Association and eventually promote local races. While providing numerous services to its members, revenue will be generated from race promotions and club membership fees. These proceeds will help support the Club’s community programs and elite athlete team creating a sustainable business model.
